Finding my style! Gen Z dilemma.....

My 19 year old came to me right after the holidays and asked me "How do you know what is your fashion style?" and I was perplexed by such an obvious subject to me. Since I was born I was surrounded by fashion icons; at age 5 or 6 , I will accompany my mom to modeling photo-shoots and fashion shows. She will have me backstage mingling with clothes, models, photographers and make-up artist as my constant babysitters and I loved it. Early in my childhood I knew what I want it to wear, I became fascinated by hats and lipstick and although I was not the prettiest girl at school my fashion style was unique and everyone wanted to copy it, and that made me feel special. So to hear such obvious subject to me her daunting question was an eye opening that I will ponder on for the next week. True to my nature I said your style is what makes you feel beautiful, confident and true to you. Style is an extension of how you present yourself to the world. Your style should not be dictated by brands or by celebrities, you can be inspired by their style if it fits your personality, but what is best is to look at a brand or window display and find a look that makes you smile as well as you can see it as part of yourself. Later that week she sent me several pictures of outfits that appealed to her(rag & bone) (all saints) but i also did not want to intimidate her with prices that are not necessarily available to a college student. I immediately went on my hunt to give her a path to follow without making her feel broke and frustrated. I told her style has a California bohemian chic vibe and brands like rag and bone are perfect for her yet they are pricey. Her best bet until she has a job is to be inspired by the outfits and search for similar pieces at less expensive brands.

Within 30 min of her sending me the pictures, her savvy IN HOUSE STYLIST was able to send her the above pictures and she was very excited. I also shared with her my favorite trick... which is to visit vintage and thrift shops, but she immediately was discourage as she finds shopping in general, a pest. I told her that once you have an idea to let it take it's form as she shops and be open minded .... that's the best challenge. I ended up with two gorgeous outfits for much less money!!!
